Tattooing by Women #4

I don't have a nickname. I've never been to a tattoo convention, and until
1993 I'd never been in another tattoo studio other than the one that I
apprenticed in.
In
1979, I started tattooing in San Jose under the guidance of Chuck Marshall, but
I left the profession after two years. I wasn't able to handle the late hours
and a home, husband, and baby. Plus, I wasn't sure I wanted to tattoo as a
career.
Being an artist, I pursued other goals. I concentrated on raising
my family and got involved in my church. But, I was drawn to return to
tattooing. My husband encouraged me to return on my terms. I didn't return to
Chuck's shop. Instead, I started tattooing my friends and family with the
equipment that I received from my husband as a birthday gift.

We left the big city of San Jose and moved to a sleepy little town called
Paradise. We're about 100 miles north of Sacramento. The word got around town
that I tattooed, and I found out that I had enough work to keep me very busy.
There was only one tattoo shop within one hundred miles, and its reputation
wasn't very flattering.
After
working in my home for a year or so, I tried to get a home occupation permit. I
had found out that I needed a license in order to be legal, and a permit in
order to operate within the city limits. This permit was denied because of the
zoning regulations. So, it looked like it was time for me to open up a studio of
my own.
Paradise wasn't quite sure what to do with me. They had never
had a "tattoo parlor" in town. So, I jumped through every hoop that they asked
me to jump through. They couldn't find a way to keep me out. We opened our doors
here at "New Creation Dermagraphic Studio" in October of 1991. We've gotten good
press, and we have very positive feelings about the future.

I've learned alot over the years about tattooing and about running my own
business. Thanks to a liberated mother who instilled in her children that "there
isn't any anything you can't accomplish if you put your mind to it and work hard
at it". I'm sure this business will prosper.
I thank God for the abilities
that He's given to me and for the opportunity to give Him the glory for them.
