Does it Hurt?

A piercing can hurt if it's performed improperly. However, a piercing done by a professional will only take a few seconds, which means the pain is very minimal. It is quite similar to the prick of a needle in a blood test. We do not use anesthesia, as administration would be just as painful, if not more so, than the actual piercing. Remember the anesthesia is administered via a hypodermic needle. In the time it takes to administer the anesthesia, a professionally trained piercer will have completed both the piercing and the placement of the jewelry. Anesthesia is both unnecessary and harmful, as it can prolong the healing time, it can cause excessive and unnecessary bleeding, and can also cause pain afterwards. When a piercing is performed, the body will respond normally by releasing endorphins and will naturally produce peptides, which raise the individual's pain tolerance, using specific opiate receptors in the central nervous system. This reaction will subside most feelings of pain and anxiety.

Do you use a gun?

No! A gun should never be used for any body or facial piercing. Piercing guns are inaccurate, more painful and not as safe as properly sterilized needles. Guns cannot be properly sterilized -- they are usually sprayed with alcohol, which will not kill HIV, Hepatitis, or other viruses.

How is a piercing done?

Equipment for a standard navel pierce The procedure is quite simple, but the proper knowledge is what is most important. The installation equipment and jewelry must be sterilized for a period of at least 30 minutes at 15 to 18 pounds of pressure, and the temperature should be 270 to 290 degrees. This is necessary to destroy any form of infectious bacteria, germs, and especially viruses. Boiling water, alcohol, Sterilon or Dettol will not accomplish this. To ensure sterilization, the tools used at New Creation are sterilized by using a three step process:

  1. 24-hour cold soak solution (hospital disinfectant)
  2. Anti-bacterial scrub
  3. Approved autoclave

The area of skin to be pierced must be cleansed thoroughly with a medical skin disinfectant. Installation is best achieved by using Pennington stainless steel forceps and a stainless steel hypodermic needle modified for piercing. Marking a precise spot for the piercing itself is very important for health reasons and for the overall look. Improper placement can cause unnecessary rejections, tears, scarring, bleeding, or nerve damage. Our staff has been specifically trained in proper placement, and will only perform safe piercings. After the area is marked and the piercing has been made, the jewelry is then pressed in the back of the specially designed needle and guided in without any further discomfort. The finished piercing is treated with a germicidal as well as an antiseptic ointment.

Why can't I get pierced?

New Creation reserves the right to refuse service to anyone. These are the following reasons or conditions which we will not recommend piercings to be done:

  1. You are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
We will not service a client we believe to be under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, or any narcotics, as these substances tend to negatively intensify the piercing experience and may create dangerous consequences.
  2. You request a piercing in an area that may reject the ring (as determined by the piercer) or may pose a possible health risk.
  3. You are on certain medications, have allergic reactions or you have health problems that may interfere with your piercing.
  4. You are under the age of consent and do not have parent with you.

Why do I have to sign a release form?

The release form is a type of communication as well as consent. By signing the release form, you are letting us know that:

  1. You understand the seriousness of piercing.
  2. You are in good physical and personal health.
  3. You are at least the age of consent.
  4. You intend to follow the aftercare procedure as prescribed by the New Creation staff.

The form is also our way of conveying to you the time, care, and work New Creation has invested to insure you a safe and proper piercing.

What kind of jewelry should I use?

The type of metal used in producing body jewelry is of great importance. The metal must be hypo-allergenic and must be unaffected by body fluids, tissue, fresh and salt water, oils, lubricants, soaps, shampoos, etc. Body jewelry metal should be polished to a high mirror finish which will not tarnish or corrode. The finished surface should be virtually non-porous -- this will help retard the growth of bacteria and germs. Surgical stainless steel is ideal to use in the body. New Creation uses 3161 surgical stainless steel, the grade used by hospitals for surgical implants. Surgical stainless steel is silver in color and meets all of listed requirements. A colorful alternative to stainless steel is niobium. Niobium is an element that can be anodized for a wide range of colors and meets all of the mentioned requirements. Once you have selected the style and type of jewelry you want the piercer will determine the appropriate thickness (gauge) and diameter (width). Correct measurements are proper for healing.

How do I take care of it?

You will be given an aftercare instruction sheet after your piercing. One of our staff will thoroughly explain the procedure in an aftercare session with you. It is imperative that you follow these instructions. This will directly affect the health and healing time of your new piercing. PLEASE DO NOT seek advice from anyone who is not a professional piercer, as the advice may not be right for you. Remember everyone is different.

What should I do in case of infection?

Infections rarely occur if the guidelines of the aftercare sheet are followed. Review our piercing aftercare instructions.  Make sure you have freshly washed hands before touching a new piercing or jewelry to decrease your chances of getting an infection.   However, if you do get an infection, we are here to help you. If you get an infection, it is very important that you leave the jewelry in the piercing. If the ring is removed while the piercing is infected, the piercing will close and the infection will be sealed in. Check-ups are free with our service, and if you develop an infection we will most likely be able to determine the cause and find a solution. Any questions, consultations, or additional checkups are welcome. We will help you in any way we can. REMEMBER, no question is a stupid question if it relates to your body.

Why is the service expensive?

The most expensive part of our piercing package will be the jewelry. We use only the best jewelry for the piercing to help prevent infections and discoloration's. The piercing fee includes a clean private room, a new stainless steel sterilized needle that is disposed of after the piercing, disposable gloves, sterilized tools, and sterilization of the jewelry you have chosen. The service fee covers the cost of these medical supplies and ensures a safe and healthy piercing.

Do I need an appointment?

An appointment is not necessary, but it is advised that you call in advance to inquire about the availability of our piercers. New Creation's hours of business are Tuesday through Thursday from 12:00 noon until 6:00 pm, and on Friday and Saturday from 12:00 noon until 8:00pm.   Call 530 898-8287 to schedule an appointment.
